In Sofia, Bulgaria, to explore the city

But first we have to get there. It’s a 6am flight from Gatwick so we have to check in at 4am. Our first challenge is getting from our airport hotel room to the airport concourse. We have to go up to go down. At 3.30am puzzle solving is not yet awake and operating but we make it to the check in desk on time.

Our 6am flight is from the North Terminal. We boarded a bus, which then took us all around the airport to the plane, which is parked at the South Terminal. Where we waited while they located and pulled one bag belonging to a no show, then another slight wait while they boarded a handcuffed individual under Border Force escort to Sofia.

The flight continued without any further excitement and we arrived early enough to take a walk around the city.

This is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral under an ever-darkening sky.

The National Theatre.

This pyramid-shaped monument is a dedication to the doctors who died in the Russian-Turkish war of liberation.
