Avebury stone circle

  
Avebury is about 30 minutes’ drive from where we’re staying in Purton. The village is surrounded by a Neolithic henge monument (I got that from Wikipedia, I’ve always thought of it as a stone circle).

 It’s close to, but larger than, Stonehenge and dates to 2600 BCE so we’ve gone from comparatively recent castles and churches that are only 1000 years old to something much older.   

The village came much later and the enterprising villagers used some of the stones to build their cottages. Today small cement bollards mark the vacant spots between the remaining stones.
